Order Wisely: 3rd year medical school curriculum

A leading principle of high-value practice is utilization of tests and treatments in accordance with established clinical practice guidelines. To reinforce this practice, we designed this educational program for 3rd year of medical school, which incorporates appropriate use principles for imaging exams, lab tests, medications, transfusions and other treatments. An understanding of the evidence behind appropriate use and data confirming that care refinement maintains or improves patient care quality and safety are important to drive adherence. Half of the content is dedicated to appropriate use of imaging exams, as they are high cost tests for patients and to ensure that clinicians are prepared for the CMS Appropriate Use Program beginning January 2020, which includes evaluation of their ordering appropriateness for advanced imaging (CT, MRI and nuclear medicine examinations).
